One of the heaviest actions of the Vietnam War occurred between the Australian Army and Viet Cong forces on 18th August 1966. The engagement occurred when part of the 1st Australian Task Force (D Company) encountered the Viet Cong and local forces in a rubber plantation near the village of Long Tan. Long Tan was a decisive Australian Victory and is often cited as an example of the importance
of combining infantry artillery armour and military aviation in a coordinated attack.
