The Story

Struck by the Melbourne Mint just after the great depression, this stunning Australian 1935 Proof Halfpenny and Penny Pair was issued for VIP's, members of parliament, designers and collectors also prepared to pay a premium above the face value.

The demand for proof coins outside Australia, saw orders exported to dealers in the United Kingdom, United States and New Zealand, resulting in limited numbers on the domestic market. Mint records indicate only 100 pairs were struck, but only 30 perfect pairs have survived.

The term 'proof' refers to a coin's method of manufacture, not its state of preservation. Australian Pre-Decimal Proof coins of this period are struck twice from specially prepared, freshly polished dies and have near brilliant surfaces with perfect detail. Standard 1935's were struck in the millions.

These coins exhibit a lovely red brown patina and mirror reflective fields.
