The Story

KOALA & FLOWERING GUM

A three year joint program the Royal Australian Mint and The Perth Mint struck sixteen different 99.9% pure silver five dollar proofs for the Sydney Olympics dated 2000. Each coin has the edge lettering GAMES OF THE XXVII OLYMPIAD.

Stuart Devlin's original concept description:

A koala sitting in a eucalypt tree - the main source of its food - will be featured in the central area and will be surrounded by a border of the abundant flowers and nuts of the flowering gum.

His comments on the final design:

'I tried to depict a contented koala contemplating his next meal. The flowering gum has always been a favourite of mine possibly because there was a magnificent specimen near where I lived as a child in Geelong. From a designer's perspective it gives scope for variety because both the buds and the seeds (nuts) are almost as interesting as the flowers.'

Outer case deteriorated as normal for age
