Issued in September 1999 this coin is the 15th in a 28 Coin Sydney 2000 Aluminium Bronze Specimen Collection produced jointly by the Royal Australian Mint in Canberra and the Perth Mint. The coin is presented sealed on a credit-card style pack.
Having evolved from the ancient form of combat fencing is one of only four sports that have featured at every modern Olympic Games. Three types of fencing weapons - the foil épée and sabre - are used at the Olympic Games. Bouts are held on a 14 by 1.5 metre piste or playing area. Through wires and special clothing fencers are connected to an electronic scoring system that indicates if a hit has occurred.
