Beach volleyball threatened to steal the show as a new event in the Olympic Games in 1996. Its sunshine-and-surf version of the game - played on sand and with two players instead of six - makes the most of its glamorous Bondi Beach venue. Unlike indoor volleyball an Olympic Games staple since 1964 points are scored only when the serving team wins a rally. The indoor game is introducing revolutionary rule changes such as rally points which allow the defence to score giving every rally greater urgency
